What is biochar?

Biochar is a type of charcoal used as a soil conditioner to promote plant growth. Unlike traditional charcoal, which is mainly used for fuel, biochar is valuable for agricultural purposes and can also help capture and store carbon in the soil. Made from organic materials like wood, crop residues, and other plant matter, biochar is produced through a process called pyrolysis, where the biomass is heated in a low-oxygen environment.

Biochar, like ordinary charcoal, is produced from biomass energy materials through a process called pyrolysis, where the material is heated in a low-oxygen environment. Its primary component is carbon molecules, making it highly stable and long-lasting. Unlike regular charcoal, which is primarily used as fuel, biochar has unique properties that make it ideal for use in soil enhancement, carbon capture, and long-term carbon storage.

Benefits of biochar

kerone bio b4

Nature

Biochar, a carbon-rich material from pyrolyzed organic matter like agricultural waste, enhances soil health by increasing water retention, boosting fertility, and supporting beneficial microbial activity when added to soil.

Climate

Biochar mitigates climate change by sequestering carbon in soil for centuries, removing CO₂ from the atmosphere. It also reduces methane and nitrous oxide emissions in agriculture by altering soil microbial activity.

Animal

Biochar benefits livestock and poultry by improving feed efficiency, reducing methane emissions, and boosting overall health. As a feed additive, it detoxifies harmful substances, enhances digestion, and promotes growth.

Carbon Trading

Biochar’s ability to sequester carbon opens up opportunities in carbon trading markets. Companies and individuals can earn carbon credits by producing or using biochar, which can then be traded or sold to offset their carbon emissions.
